At Montecatini, we are committed to walking with you through your entire healing process. If you have already completed residential treatment, or if you are looking to admit directly into one of our outpatient programs, our flexible continuing care options offer personalized treatment for women, ages 16 and older.
Outpatient Programming at Montecatini
Located about 10 minutes away from our residential rehab program in coastal Carlsbad, California, our beautiful outpatient facility is a warm environment, thoughtfully designed to bring deep healing to mind, body, and spirit.
Recovering from an eating disorder requires authenticity, trust, and courage. So that each of our patients feel comfortable enough to do the brave work that recovery requires, we offer a full continuum of care. The patient’s therapist, dietitian, psychiatrist, and treatment team will remain the same at every level of treatment (residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP)) to ensure continued growth and healing.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
PHP services, which are offered Monday through Saturday, include supervised meals and snacks, as well as weekly sessions with our primary therapists, dietitians, and medical team. Programming runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m, with evening PHP hours available on select days. This program, which features the same positive, respectful, and culturally sensitive environment that our residential rehab offers, treats each patient’s mind, body, and spirit. It also enables women to build upon the skills they learned in the first stages of their healing processes. Patients in PHP receive structured care and support with two individual therapy sessions, a number of group sessions offered each day, and we provide one meal and two snacks—all with support from caring and trained staff members.
If you would like to live in a supportive community while enrolled in PHP, we have transitional living available.
Our PHP Program:
- PHP 8 hours a day, 6 days a week
- Minimum of 5-6 sessions a week (therapist, dietitian, psychiatrist/psychiatric physician assistant, nurse)
- Medical and psychiatric oversight
- Individual sessions with exercise physiologist in wellness center
- Movement in moderation psycho-education group
- Joyful movement and exercise groups led by exercise physiologist (if patient is cleared by treatment team)
- Integrated care group
- Weekly psycho-education and therapeutic process groups, art therapy, NIA, and yoga
- Weekly experiential therapies including restaurant outings, grocery shopping, and cooking group
- Transitional living and transportation available
Your patient could be appropriate for PHP if…
- They are medically and psychiatrically stable
- They need structured meal support for the majority of their meals
- Some insight that their eating disorder is adversely affecting their daily life
- They need accountability regarding their urges and behaviors
- They could benefit from daily group therapy and multiple individual sessions throughout the week
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) & Evening IOP
Our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for women who are nearly ready to go back to living in their respective communities. Montecatini’s IOP program is four hours a day, Monday- Saturday. This programming includes many of the same individualized interventions as our residential and PHP programs, while offering an increased focus on discharge planning.
One supported meal and snack is provided during each IOP session. Individual therapy sessions are conducted by each patient’s primary therapist, and occur one time each week. Group therapy sessions are also an integral part of Montecatini’s IOP treatment, and occur daily.
A number of flexible time options for IOP programming are available: 8:30am, 9:30am, or 12:30pm. Evening IOP beginning at 4:30pm is also available three nights per week, for those who work or attend school during the day.

- They need minimal accountability regarding their urges and behaviors
- They could benefit from more individual sessions and groups than provided in outpatient therapy
Outpatient Groups
Outpatient Groups Include:
- Individual therapy sessions are conducted by the patient’s primary therapist. These sessions are designed to help patients process their triumphs and setbacks, and also enable them to discuss their experiences while in treatment within the sanctity of a therapeutic relationship.
- Group therapy allows our patients to provide and receive support from one another and our staff. Groups are held daily and include several patients so that they are able to support and encourage one another. Led by therapists, registered nurses, patient assistants, yoga instructors, and art therapists, patients are able to benefit from the following groups while in our care.
- Family therapy helps our patients mend the relationships they have with those they hold dear. Offered once per week for our adolescent patients and once per week or on an as-needed basis for our adult patients, family therapy sessions are led by our patients primary therapists and can be an excellent forum in which women and their loved ones can re-establish themselves as a united front against the dangerous cycle of an eating disorder.
- Experiential therapy assists Montecatini’s PHP patients in learning to apply their recovery skills in real-world settings. The following activities are those that patients can participate in while engaged in our PHP
- Mindfulness and meditation group
- Connected recovery group
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) group
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) group

Wellness Program
Individual and Group Sessions:

- Individual postural assessment with Exercise Physiologist- indicates what corrective exercises the patient should start with
- Exercise Physiologist creates movement plan based on patients individual goals, interests, and stage of recovery
- Groups focused on helping patients explore diverse modalities and discover joyful movement
Movement in Moderation Group:
The movement in moderation psycho-education group focuses on creating a healthier relationship with your body through developing variety, moderation, and balance in physical activity. This group addresses the range of dysfunctional relationships to movement from exercise resistance to abuse, and everything in between. It addresses the misuse of our bodies. This group challenges the idea of exercise as a compartmentalized life activity but rather looks at movement and rest as a naturally integrated part of a healthy life. This group promotes activity for fun, pleasure, connection and medicine.
Moderation in Movement challenges assumptions that exercise is for body perfecting, calorie burning, goal oriented activity but rather assists the patient in listening to their own bodies’ energy and fatigue cues.
Types of Movement:
- Aerial yoga swings
- Hula-hoops, skip-its, and jump ropes
- Four square
- Cardiovascular machines
- Volleyball, soccer, dance
- Boxing
- Ribbon dancing
- Resistance bands and free weights
